Polyvinyl Alcohol PVA has the following excellent properties:
Soluble PVA is soluble in water, and the higher the water temperature, the greater the solubility, but Polyvinyl Alcohol PVA is almost insoluble in organic solvents. The solubility of PVA varies with the degree of alcoholysis and polymerization. Partial alcoholysis and low polymerization degree PVA dissolve very quickly, while complete alcoholysis and high polymerization degree PVA dissolve slowly. The general rule is that the degree of alcoholysis has a greater impact on the solubility of PVA than the degree of polymerization. The PVA dissolution process is carried out in stages, namely: affinity wetting swelling infinite swelling dissolution.
PVA with film-forming properties is easy to form, and its mechanical properties are excellent. The tensile strength of the film increases with the increase of polymerization degree and alcoholysis degree.
Adhesive PVA has good adhesion with hydrophilic cellulose. In general, the higher the degree of polymerization and alcoholysis, the stronger the adhesive strength.
When the thermally stable PVA powder is heated to around 100 ℃, its appearance gradually changes. Partially alcoholized PVA begins to melt at around 190 ℃ and decomposes at 200 ℃. Fully alcoholized PVA begins to melt at around 230 ℃ and decomposes at 240 ℃. Thermal cracking experiments show that the lower the degree of polymerization, the faster the weight reduction; The higher the degree of alcoholysis, the shorter the decomposition time.
Medical grade PVA includes specifications such as PVA05-88, PVAl7-88, PVA-124, etc. The alcoholysis degree of the first two specifications is (88 ± 2) (m01)%, and the average polymerization degree (n) is 500-600 and 1700-1800, respectively; The alcoholysis degree of PVA.124 is 98-99 (m01)%, and the average polymerization degree (n) is 2400-2500.
